Leather Book Bone

Description

The Book Bone is one of the first leather creations I made, and it is near and dear to my heart. If you’re an avid book-reader, this Book Bone is an absolute necessity. I do a lot of book reading for both work and personal enjoyment, and I have used my Book Bone so frequently that I can’t imagine reading without it! I have made some of these for a few of my friends, and they, too, have had similar experiences.

The Book Bone itself (8.5″ x 2.5″) is weighted on either end and rigid, making it ideal to set on top of an open book. It utilizes the weights as well as opposing force from each side of the book to hold a book open and enable hands-free reading (for you underliners out there, the edges of this book bone provide a handy way to make your lines straight).

I have handcrafted each of these items and used only the best materials–these could last you a lifetime! Each one is made from one piece of 5/6 oz. full-grain Horween Chromexel, one of the best leathers in existence. I have chosen to use only one folded piece of leather in order to add to its durability. Along with the metal weights, these are inlaid with chipboard which help the item remain rigid.

In order to further increase this item’s durability, I hand-stitch each Book Bone with Tiger thread, or Ritza 25. This thread is by far the best for items such as this, having been specially created and spun for leather products. I can custom-make your item with another thread color, no problem–just ask! Lastly, I painted the edges with Fiebing’s Edge Kote (black).

Each Book Bone is different because of the character of full grain leather. Because it is taken from the top portion of the cowhide, any scars, scrapes, or brands the cow picked up along the way will show. These marks add texture and personality in a pretty amazing way. In fact, the best-looking projects I’ve made have feature these “flaws,” making them entirely unique and pleasing to the eye.
